An understanding of hormone production and polyploidy in plants is of great importance to agricultural research. The relationship between the two, however, has much left to be discovered in a variety of plants. We propose to experimentally induce polyploidy in Hemerocallis hybrida, then analyze the differences in auxin production and synthesis in varying levels of ploidy using a reporter gene linked to auxin-specific promoters. We will also analyze the effects that variable ploidy levels have on plant development. Gaining further understanding on how varying ploidy changes biochemical balance in plants can have an important impact on agricultural research and further innovation in that field.
