I will highlight an interdisciplinary model based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model of child development and four prominent leadership theories. I have worked with a national team of women scholars in developing and refining this model. The Integrated Capacious Model (ICM) is an interdisciplinary, multi-level examination of leadership identities across space, time, and people, rather than as a single heroic leader, instance, or identity. The model's Systems (Individual System, Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem, and Chronosystem) locate leader identity in time and space, while its Influences (Purpose/Calling, Self-Identity, Social Identity, and Relationships) pinpoint key factors affecting leader identities. The model connects its Systems and Influences with prominent leader identity theories (Narrative Identity, Identity Theory, Social Identity Theory, and Social Constructionism). Discussion will include presenting an overview of the model, highlighting how it may be used to analyze personal leadership identity experience, and suggesting uses for leader identities development programs.
