Theatre is a part of “the great cultural flow of humanity:” a phrase I am coining from Rosa Guerrero. We as a community of theatricians are making play with actions, words, movement and images to bring more meaning into life. Making art as a community of artists is thrilling. People of diverse identities are able to come together for the cause of theatre. It is truly play: an organic series of actions and reactions. My presentation will include a brief description of my study of Burch Mann, my study on comedic costumes, and my experience as Designer of the “Public Displays” Dance Concert. Burch Mann is a deserving icon in the theatre department, however there is no existing body of work written about her. She was a formidable figure that greatly contributed to what the dance department is today. Studying her has taught me so much on an academic and personal level. My study of comedic costumes has also changed my life. Bringing an academic light to costumes only confirms how necessary they are. Costumes are a language and as a designer, I have had the chance to dabble in that language. For the dance concert, I applied my study of comedic costumes to a theatrical dance piece. At the risk of sounding dramatic, my works have changed me. Working here at SUU has cultivated my creativity. What’s more, the connections with the Shakespeare Festival and professors have helped me build a professional portfolio. The Festival of Excellence is where I will present to the staff and students everything the Theatre and Dance Department has offered me these past years and what I have done with those opportunities. Now I get to take my play out to the world and continue to participate in the great cultural flow of humanity.
